As some of you are aware I had to give up on my idea of pea puffers for my little hex tank.

I've been looking at ram cichlids and i'm confident their small size and gentle demeanour will ensure they will be ok in my hex tank.

I went to my LFS today and they had a tankful of just males. I was watching them for a while and they were extremely placid with one another, they looked great.

So I bought three. I've put them in quarantine and within a couple of hours they were eating some flake and had coloured up beautifully, a stunning little fish. I can't wait to set this hex tank up now, possibly next week.

Nice pickup but if you decide to add a female all that gentle demeanor will disappear ?

I suggest you choose the best male of the 3 and re home the other two and get a couple of females

At this moment I'm not too interested in breeding. For now i just want to enjoy these little fellas and see where it takes me.

The most important thing is to make sure that the rams are from a good strain. The petco/smart ones die very easily unless u maintain pristine water quality.

My LFS usually gets good stock, and they look fantastic, so i'm not too worried about strain quality.

I have kept the blue ram before today but they didn't fare well. I since found out that this species prefers higher temps than your usual com tank. I believe that's why I failed with my original blues, water was too cool for them. This time my temps will be higher.

I was always under the impression they were shy.

Mine are quiet at the minute but I put it down to new surroundings. I'm hoping in time they become quite active. If not I may need to take a leaf from your book and get some dithers to bring them out a bit.

WIth regards to dithers, try chili rasboras. VERY small and peaceful, so ideal for rams.

Another piece of advice: if chili rasboras aren't available, skip the neons. They prefer cooler water to rams and are prone to all kinds of health problems brough on by overbreeding for the industry.
