Ram Name Origin?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's short for Ramirezi, simple as that. For example, the german blue ram is just short for the German blue ramirezi cichlid.

Well just like in sheep the male ram fish is born with horns, which are removed early in development to prevent the tank being broken by them ramming it.

You really need to hear my why are they called buffalo wing explanation.

esoxlucius esoxlucius has it right. It's part of the scientific name.

I'm intrigued, my curiosity has got the better of me, c'mon spill the beans. Now why do I have this funny feeling that this thread is going to go pretty daft, and pretty quick, lol.

To get even more trivial, the Ram was name after Manuel Ramirez an early fish collector, and importer in the tropical fish trade.
Similar to the cardinal tetra Paracheirodon axelrodi, which was named after Herbert Axelrod another of the more notable tropical fish collectors early in the aquarium hobby.

Same goes for quite a few fish in the hobby.

It quite long but maybe after work I'll type it out. The main thing you have to realize is that more then one person believed me at least for a little bit.

It just occurred to me what a weird name ‘Ram’ is for a genus of fish.
Ramirezi is the species name, genus is Microgeophagus, which means exactly what it looks like, small geophagus. The other species is altispinosus, which has a couple of regional variants that some think could be split into different species.
