So after seeing some people with decent sized tanks that are divided up to keep aggressive fish in there, i was wondering, is it still correct to say they are in a large tank with plenty of space?

For example, say a person had a 180G+ tank, but then divided into 3 sections with dividers giving each fish approx.60G worth of space, then in each section say had between 1 - 2 fish the size of say oscars... would that be considered a decent permanent living space for the fish, or a cramped tank?

Sorry if it seems like a random question, but as the title says, i just had a brain fart and thought i would ask the MFK community what your thoughts on this issue are?

I would say it is cramped.
Just because it is a big jail doesn't make the jail cell any more livable.

I voted cramped, of course that vote is subject to a lot of things such as fish size, mature size, activity level of the fish etc. In my opinion dividing the tank is essentially creating a new tank inside the original. It doesn't matter how much space the original tank has what's important is the amount of space available to the fish. You'll still get some of the biological benefits of a large tank but the fish will still be subjected to the stress factor of being in a confined space. Just my opinion on the matter.

I forgot to vote, but i agree with those of you who said it would be cramped...

The only reason i thought of this was because the other day i overheard a guy talking to a store owner about how he had a few fish in a 6ft tank, and when the owner seemed surprised they didn't kill each other, the guy said he had them divided in the tank and they were all happy and healthy...

Then it got me thinking, wouldn't that be the same as putting a big fish in a small tank... so i guess that just helps solidify the idea in my head that yes, it definitely is cramped no matter how you slice it...

it would depend on the fish devideing the tank is fine but if you devid the tank you need to think of each part as a sepret tank and put a fish in that area that is suited to that size for example if you divide a 55 into two it can nolonger be a 55 but 2 27g units connected

I would say cramped. I really don't like the appeal of keeping an LFS in your own home. If you wanna go variety, do a community and experiment. It will be a risky trial and error but be prepared for the cost and be responsible.

Agree completly. When you have a oscar in say a 90 gal, it has 90 gals of water to live and swim in, but if you divde it in half, they are cramped to 45 gals.I think its fine to say it lives in a split 90 gal(even tho that would be horrible for a full grown oscar), but the divider limits the livin space greatly

Depends on the fish and it's needs. Most fish I see in thar situation are bettas or large cichlid grow outs... In lfs i have seen also australian aros kept like this so they don't kill each other. In those cases I am fine with the practice...do you really see full size large fish display permanently like this? I personally have not and feel that is a poor way to show a fish.
