Sorry if I sound somewhat sarcastic or rude but I'm really sick of "Who has the biggest Ganoids" talk...Plus it is way off and annoying how many people think they know how large these fish get (Naturally all is parroted from petersons or the net or whatever) or what is a proper tank size for a given fish. (Again rarely based on experiance but parroted from one source or another)

I'm sure that pretty soon we will see Jethro grinning with a big dead gator gar as that is also the nessesary pic for every one of these threads...And it will be used to discribe the size of a florida gar and how they need a 20 billion gallon tank..Basicly every one of these threads becomes a big waste of space and a really good example of how to waste electrons.

So in short I will tell you "I keep gar", Lots of them BTW, and as Sol just mentioned I have kept or cared for many larger than average size as well as quite average sized fish. The details on there bigness or tank sizes is really irrelivent. (I will be happy to tell you my experiance with or my work with the fish though)

What is relivent and seems to be missed often is the actual husbandry details and some real information or facts surrounding gar or the biology / ecology of the fish it's self. It would be nice if more where actually interested in the fish and dwell a bit less on "How big is your gar?" or "How big is your tank?"

just because people want to know how big they get, who has the biggest, and the tank sizes they are kept in doesnt mean they dont care about the fish. IMO thats a pretty negative assumption of your fellow MFK members. personaly i love to hear about and see everyones fish and tank setups.

The reason ive have asked these questions is that there is not much information on keepin gator gars in the UK.:(
The whole reason behind the "how big is your tank" question is that i AM going to keep my gator gar and would like to know the size of the tank/pond i would need to build. as im not willing to go half arsed into this and spend a lot of money either building a tank or if i need re-landscaping my garden, then olny to have to re-house her in a few years.
If you feel that these threads about keeping large gars are irrelivent then dont post in here.:irked: and allow other people who are going to post helpful answers.
So, if anyone has any REAL experiance in keeping large gars then PLEASE, i would be very greatful of any advice.
Cheers Mac

Thank you Demjor, it is amazing how many people can read a post and straight away and make negative assumptions about other people.

So, thank you again for "standing on my side" lol. I will not be posting any more pics of Ally til she is much bigger tho, as she is only a baby, lol.
But I WILL be posting some pics of my need tank, 432g(when it finally turns up).
Bye for now,
Mac

Polypterus does have the real experiance in gar keeping and im sure he has had/cared for some very large ones. i agree with you though...if people dont like these threads then just dont post! this is a puplic forum and we are all just having fun and socializing. as for a tank/pond size i would think 5,000-10,000 gal. for life. i have no experiance with gators and housing them thats just a guess. good luck w/ him and if you need any help or advice i have a gar just not a gator...so i may be able tyo help. keep us posted on him. id like to see him grow up!

Then why did you not just ask that? Instead you made a very vague post without much detail or reason but to go with the same old thread that can be read over and over and over again on here...

And to anwser the more direct question:
The fish will need at full adult size (which can vary depending on sex and genetics) a pond or enclousure 10' x 10' x 5' Minimium anything larger than this would be just dandy...Smaller I would not suggest it.
