These are the sails that crawled up out of my yard, when it rained today.

I wonder if my Oscar would like to eat these?


It’s amazing how different they are from each other but they all crawled out of the same patch of grass.

This is a higher resolution photo of one of the largest snails. This was well over 1 inch in diameter and clearly larger than any mystery snail I’ve ever bought.

Those are the common European garden snail, Cornu aspersum (Helicidae). It is the main species used as food (scargot), but other species are also used. It has been introduced to many places worldwide, including the USA. They are an impportant agricultural pest. They obviously are remarkably variable in coloration, including melanistic and near white, but most are variations of the concentric broad stripes with smaller addional markings. The fish should love them ((if offered cracked, or large fish who can crack them).

Very nice,I have wanted to keep land snails but I understand they are verboten!

The only thing I know about snails is that you’re not supposed to keep Apple snails here because they clog up the plumbing. The other thing is that a really big water change is almost always deadly on your aquarium snails.

My friend and I used to feed these to our oscars when we were kids and they loved them. Used to pick them up on the way home from school and threw them into the tank whole and they would crack them and suck out the snails. Never had a problem

Just be sure they come from an area where they are not using “snailicides”

Thanks guys. We have way too many nice ones for me to suspect any poison is being used.

Felix eats these little ram horns nails in his tank all the time, but today I gave Felix his first land snail ever & he loved it.
I have really seen him this excited, and he crunched that snail and spit it back out before I could get a photo.

He repeatedly sucked it in and crushed it and spit it back out until it was just right and then he sucked it down.

Now he’s fussing around looking at me to see if I will feed him some more. Here he is with a mouth full of snail.
