I was in china town the other day and they had some beautiful live stonefish at one of the seafood stores. Does anyone know if the stonefish they sell on the street are freshwater? They were very large, brown with little growths on the chin. Looked like a freshwater one. I did nothave my camera on me, so I have no pictures. I am really tempted to grab two and try them in one of my tanks.

That's a freshwater species. Really cool, but hide a lot.

Think theres only 2 usually seen in the aquarium hobby, most common is Thalassophryne amazonica. However there is also probably the most common, which are saltwater toadfish, Batrachomoeus trispinosus is often seen. However they are often found in esturies and sometimes even freshwater so thats why they get labelled as freshwater just like so many other fish. A lot of people keep these in brackish though with great success. It is probably these that you saw.

I have kept them the brown one with full of warts for 3 days,it should never be combined with lots of fish because other fish will keep on nibbling it's warts,it never succeeded in a freshwater,I guess it is brackish, try looking for a toadfish instead I've heard they are freshwater...let's see some pics

Toadfish are Batrachoididae, stonefish are Synanceiidae. The one Charney pictured looked like Batrachomoeus trispinosus, which would do better in brackish water.

let's see some pics! and lets see what type it is...Or maybe just dip your finger and taste it:drool:

i thought about taking a quick taste, but thankfully did not. Tomorrow I will try to go back over there and give camera on the cell phone a try.

salty:irked: = it lives in the sea
not salty  = it lives in a river
not too salty:grinno: = it lives in estuatries (brackish)
