I have just set up my 55 gallon, and put my betta in to help cycle the tank. He has been in there for about a week and (maybe it's just me) he seems really happy in there! I dont want to take him out, seems like it would be almost cruel to put him back into a 1 gallon bowl. Guess it all depends on what other fish I end up getting. Any ideas on suitable tank mates?

with that much space i don't see why you couldn't put a few male and female bettas in that tank, add some plants, cool looking structure.... and walaa:popcorn: i maybe wrong but i can't imagine a 1.5 inch betta being able to rule over other bettas in such a large tank. Just think of all the color the aquarium would have:headbang2

my betta was fine with guppys swordtails ect.
just make sure the animal dont look like a male betta.

the minute i added a dwarf gorami it all kicked off

do not put another male betta in there! i had two males in my 180 as a test and they still found each other. i seperated them almost instantly so no harm was done. mine lived well with some small african cichlids, angels, gourami (not dwarf), a pleco, and a needle fish. i would try to avoid anything that looks like another male betta.

I also had a Betta in a 55, for a short time...Cories where ok, black skirts were OK...Somthing that won't nip the Betta, but fast enough to get out of his way also...He set up territory in a front corner and didn't venture much farther than that...

Angels and African cichlids came to mind as possible tank mates. I did have an other male betta in the tank as well took about an hour before they began to become aggressive towards each other. Removed one as soon as I saw them flair up and start "dancing" around each other. Thanks for the suggestions so far keep'em coming !

I had my betta in a 29g for cycling and he was loving it! When i got some yo yo loaches, they tore his fins up at feeding time. He is recovering in a 1 gallon.

You can keep just about anything with them provided their tankmates can't eat them. I've kept a betta with a pbass before. It worked for a few weeks until the Pbass got hungry.
