Can anyone rank the different species of gars in terms of their rarity? (It is propably directly proportional to their prices :))

Thanks

Cubans by far in the US ... if you're in SGP, GL finding a trop ..

I'd say:
Cuban
Trop
Shortnose
Longnose
Gator
FL/Spotted

Only reason IMO shortnose are hard to find is because they they are less desirable gars, bland coloration, skittish

For me, i think singapore has more of spotted gars, there are a few alligator gars around though..i have 3 spotted..and thew sure grow fast..:grinno:

I think I agree with fishguy7. If you included hybrids in your list, those would probably be rarer than the full species.

Cheers,

Don

:D:D:irked:

that would depend greatly on your definition of rare and the region you're in.

lets say by rarity we're talking in terms of demand/supply, to the best of my knowledge, then cuban is definitely the rarest.

trops were once absolutely unattainable, but are now somewhat readily available but at a higher cost than most other gars.

shortnose gars and true spotted gars are hard to find mainly due to the lack of demand for it.

gators would be next in line, followed by longnoses. floridas are the obvious most common.

if we were to do it in terms of hybrids and morphs,

croc I is the most common, croc III's have tuned out numerous times in the wild but there's hardly any demand for one in captivity. plat gators are easily available in japan for a pretty penny, plat trops are avail for an even prettier penny and xanthic floridas are imo the rarest. thou they may not command such a high price.

yeah, I forgot about the xanthic gars. those are sick. But I don't agree with longnoses being easy to find, at least not around here.
