Will an 8 inch rhapiel cat take down guppies at night , i have him in my Payara tank to clean up a bit, since i am feeding the live feeders that live in there! Also can he be aggressive at night, i have observed and the payaras just move out of his way when he comes along! He haas been doing an excellent job and would like to keep him, but if he eats the feeders and makes my fish nervous, i might have to move him into a different tank!

wow 8 inches? i've never seen one that big. could you posts some pics?

Strange that this post is up now. I just got back from Sherman Tank Co. in Denver. I went to buy food and found a 7" Striped Raphael Catfish "Platydoras costatus." The best part is they only wanted $14.99. The shop owner said it was the biggest one he hade seen in 25yrs. I almost didn't buy it because I figured it was too old. But they live 20yrs so I figured it was worth the risk.

Pictures coming soon.

yep , they will eat anything that fits in their mouths

I have owned rhapiels for years and had a few that got to that size and have yet to have one kill a fish, they hide a lot and almost any movement spooks them. I put one in a tank that was 1 inch big, and when I moved 6 years later I saw him for the second time in my life, he was 7 inches by that point, I had forgoten I even bought him. The tank had molies and guppies in it, if there was any eaten by him it was only one or two a month as the other fish keept breeding like crazy to keep the population up in a 200 gallon tank. I doubt you will have any problems at all, these cats are bottom cleaners more than anything.

I have one in with cichlids, It loves to eat the babies.. Yummy lol.. Awesome fish, I will get some pics soon.
He would be approx 20cm. not sure in inchs..

Cheers

If I found an 8" striped rapheal for sale I would snatch that fish up!!! They will take smaller fish in the night but tend to ignore larger fish.
