Rapid breathing all of a sudden and am I doing the right thing?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just an update, after an hour of removing the guppies, putting an extra black cover at the side and at the partial top of the tank and putting a double dose of stress coat, the rapid breathing seems to have lessen :)

What's the flow like in your tank ? Any powerheads ? Once he starts swimming with the current his breathing will improve , poss the birchirs are stressing him out a little how big are they ? also What's the height of your tank ? My jar used to get stressed a lot as a juvi due to catfish thrashing about under him , try putting a little cover in for him floating plants to build his confidence

If the ammonia goes up for any reason the bio-load is too much for the filter and tank and it burns their gills. You do not say what the filter is either. These guys get large as you know so why do you call this 20 long a grow out tank. Do you have a bigger pond or tank for it/them?

Had this with mine when he was around a foot long but once I added two power heads to do the current and aeration he got better within 24 hours he loves cruising in the flow

@Vanman, yes I do have a bigger aquarium and already said that I would transfer him to the 100 gal in 2 months. The fish died anyway, it sucks cause I checked the ammonia and nitrite and all were 0 and the filtration is a sponge filter and an overhead filter. I don't know where I went wrong and the tank is 5-6x his length given his size which is 4-5" so it is impossible a tank like that contributes to the lost. He has two albino bichir tankmates as well, both were tolerant and doesn't bother him and both are very healthy.

Hi i have a silver aro and i have a powerhead too My aro infact plays with the powerhead flow going in and out of it?
;)

20g long is too small for that fish, 20g long divided in half is ridiculous IMO. ANY ammonia reading in the tank is amplified by a higher temperature, and the stress of being in such a small tank combined with some ammonia may have done it.

@lets, I put in the divider to let him settle with the water for 1-2 days and how many times do I have to say that I'm getting an ammonia reading of 0 ? o.O

You said 0-0.25. If you have to estimate like that it's probably not 0. Regardless of how long the divider was up in my opinion it wasn't a great idea, nor was starting with a 20. Just offering my opinion.
