Rapid breathing all of a sudden and am I doing the right thing?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the tiny tank plus the overdose of meds finished him.

Not being funny but I have a single axolotl in a 20 gal n with a plant n a piece of drift wood n he's 8 inches long. I personally think it's a Lil small for him. So 2 birchers loads of guppies and an aro is massively crowded. Its no wonder he stressed out n died.

Too small tank. And prob not cycled enough.
Why didnt you put the arrow in your bigger tank to start with.
The 20 g woukd be good for guppies and and may one of the brichirs. No more.

Thats it .

After 4 weeks of cycling the water and stuff I've finally bought another jar arowana yesterday. It is currently living in a 20 gal growout tank with 2 albino bichirs and some feeder guppies but I put in a divider for him to peacefully adjust to the parameters. It was fascinating because it immediately ate a mealworm in it's first hour but I noticed this morning that it is breathing rapidly.

I check the water parameters daily and ammonia is always zero but sometimes at .25ppm and nitrite is at 0 all the way and I do WC at 10% every other day. I'm thinking it got stressed all of a sudden so I put in another cover on the side of the tank (preferably black) to make him feel more secure and add in double dose of stress coat and remove all the feeder guppies as they may have contributed to the "stress". I don't need to put in water heater as I'm living in the Philippines anyway where the temperature here goes a wooping 35-36 degrees C.

Now, can anybody answer if the arowana is stressed or something else and if it is, am I doing the right thing?

The 10% water change --- did you use something like "Prime" to remove the chlorine and chloramine? Some fishes might be very much more sensitive to these than other fishes ... your arowana might be.

Why do people buy monster fish then just them into tiny 80 L tanks ???I dont get it...
Then problems occur....and the person is surprised by this...:thumbdown:

Each week that goes by stuffed in these little tanks.. water and stress just get worse amd more unstable... conditions never get better as the fish grow fast. Stress alone is enough to kill fish.

It seems many are prepared to buy monster fish but are not prepared to buy the big tank and filtration needed

Just seen too many of these threads.

Yes as if you can easily confirm a fish's death just because he was put in an aquarium where he still has plenty of space and just because you don't want it to be placed on a tiny tank does it mean you can judge me. Boo on your attitude dude you're not even giving any smart answer.

Well Boo on your methods of raising fish

I mean:
1- 20g .. and you put a divider in so he has even less room to move.
2 - live guppies... possible.chance of parasite
3 - temp.. seems way too high..
4 - tank not cycled. ammonia and stress probably killed it.

Im not judging you. This is info you provided.. You answered your own question:screwy:

Oh .. you didn't mention how big the 2 birchirs were... let me guess ..no actually I wont.
I did also suggest you shoukd have put it in your 100g tank to start with. So if you buy another jar.. put in your bigger tank.. which is cycled I presume???

Have you even read my post properly? or you just want to take those facts to judge me? I said in my previous posts that I would take out the divider as soon as possible without anyone telling me that, and the tank is 4-5 weeks cycled already o.O and I how come the ammonia killed it if the acceptable ammonia range would be less than .25 which ain't even reaching a number higher than that?. If there is a parasite, how come my 2 bichirs were not affected and healthy? No wonder why a lot of people leave this forum.

Can anyone just close this thread? I've seen fishes kept in very bad water conditions and very small room to move for months without dying and with healthy appetite (but don't mistake me for doing such things) and all these people were like "tank is too small" "tank is too small" "tank is too small" this thread is getting nowhere anymore.
