Rapid Breathing?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi there,

I'm by no means a pro at polys but it does seem breathing pretty heavy, imo. Do you have any airstones in your tank? How's your surface agitation? That helps oxygenate your water. Also I've been told that you need to leave at least 2-4" gap between the top of your tank and the water level since polys need to breathe air.

I'm sure someone with more experience with them would chime in soon. Your polys look lovely btw. :)

My wild caught Endli came in like this and died not too much later. Not sure what the heck happened. I was not the only one though. Thinking some type of respiratory infection possibly. Good luck.

Did you just did a huge water change, or is the bichir new to its environment? i tend to see most of my polys doing this when i do a massive water change, or when i introduce a new one into the comm tank..

Kaiden - There is atleast 4 inch gap at the top and my OHF is already making huge movement on the surface and have since added an airstone. Still seems the same. And thanks for the compliment on them =)

JamesF - Yea they are like that most of the time.

kevinfleming21 - Thanks for the info, i hope mine aint sick.

anarekist - Yea i am puzzled too.

Ramsey666 - Was 3 days after the water change and they are in there for more than 2 weeks.

Honestly i havent notice if they started breathing heavily or were they doing that since the start.
Only checked their breathing when i read on it might be a sign that they are sick.
They are eating well and water tested all ok just the breathing.

Stocks are 7 bichirs (4" - 7") and 1 black aro 5" in a 4'x2'x2'.

Bare tank currently, still looking for driftwood to add in. Does that affects their breathing?

Thanks =)

Rapid breathing is also one of the 1st sign of ich. If the bichir is new, keep an eye out for any spots. It also wouldn't hurt to add salt @ 1tbsp./5G of h2o. This time of year, ich can also resurface as water temp shifts w/ the weather, sometimes w/out our realizing it
Also, if the fish is being chased or harrassed by another, its breathing will readily speed up.
