rare/odd fish available

i have always wanted to try some/any of the following types of fish but i have never seen them available in the US or Canada. From what i hear they are relatively common pets in other parts of the world, especially Europe. Does anyone know whether pet stores in Canada or the US carry any of these fish. Are there any good websites online where i could order them from and have them shipped to me?

Bitterlings, Tench, Rudd, Orfe/Ide, gobys or Zander

I'm not sure if they are legal in the states or not, however I will give some advice. Lots of times pet store won't 'carry' certain species because they are expensive and sensitive. I worked at a LFS and we had some stuff that was special order only.

For example, stingrays are very sensitive to adverse water conditions or sometimes die without obvious reason. Therefor we did not spend $100 on something that might die the next day, that we would sell for $200.

With that said, find out if the fish you interested in are generally hardy, and just call around or ask at the store if they can get those fish. You would be suprised what LFS can get but just don't carry.

Used to catch Tench and Rudd fishing in the UK, never thought of them as fish to be kept in an aquarium but I do kow that the Rudd is considered an "aquatic nuisance species in parts of the USA" so probably can't be imported (but could be caught wild in some areas - Kansas) it's a nice looking fish.

Some people tell me aquabid is an excellant site for getting fish. I haven't personally ever used it though. Will they ship to Canada or do you have to be located in the USA?

That depends on the shipper. Also, you are not likely to find any of these species on aquabid.
