I was curious as to what is everyone’s rarest or most unexpected breeding to date.

I remember reading somewhere about a guy who’s ghost knife’s unexpectedly bred and he would find the juveniles in his canister filter regularly.

Anyone else have something that happened like this?

I remember that one - that was crazy

I’ve had some Buenos Aires tetras spontaneously appear in the overflow of my tank - but with a large enough school it’s not too surprising. Still wasn’t expecting it though, especially so soon after getting them.
My convict and jd are getting really friendly…being a convict that was inevitable but we’ll see where that goes.

I've never really gotten into the breeding aspect of the hobby,I did have a few surprise spawnings back when I was keeping Malawi cichlids years ago.

Mine was Alcolapia alcalicus, the only fish from Lake Natron, a small cichlid from the "soda lake" that is more saline than the ocean, and has water temps in the 90sF.

The female was placed in a breeder box, and at 12 to 14 days after spawning she fry were spit into the box .

I have had a few over the years.
My dwarf chain loaches had 2 fry appear in the tank a while back but nothing since.
A school of 6 silver dollars spawned in a 145gal large community tank years ago.
My Zacco platypus spawning in my 75 gal was a surprise. The Rhinogobius candidianus also spawned and a few little ones survived.
Rhinogobius rubromaculatus spawning in a holding/quarantine tank was also a surprise.
Kept a few small 3-spot bream, Oreochromis andersonii, in a tiny tank in my youth. Well they took over that tank in a heartbeat and at one point were almost more fish than water.
also, various tetras, barbs and small cichlids in community tanks not set up for anything other than enjoying the fish.

R. rubromaculatus eggs. parents kept eating them.

For me, It was Polypterus mokelembembe.
I still struggle to make it happen again but couldn't make it yet.

I had a surprise fry drop from xenotoca doadrioi a few years back. That's about it in terms of objectively rare or valuable fish though. In terms of achievements for me... I got petsmart black skirts to spawn the minute I threw them in an actual blackwater setup, and I only got cryptoheros chetumalensis to spawn after like 6 months of having them. Those were pretty cool.
