Rarest Polypterus

I like to collect the rarer stuff..........which polypterus is the rarest and how big do they get? Cost guestimate would be appreciated as well.

Can they be kept in a tank with pH between 8-8.3? Also my water temp is between 77-79 usually. I keep a sand bottom and the tankmates would be moba frontosa and 2 african eels.
 
ansorgi is one of the rarer ones with not much info on it,
 
the rarest bichir i have ever heard of is that platinum congicus. it is supposedly one of a kind and is being sold for something like $24,000 usd. good luck with that.

the other rare bichirs are listed ansorgii and teugelsi.

do you guys not think p. bichir bichir is rare? just curious :D i know it's not as mythical as the other two mentioned, and i know japan has imported them 4 or 5 times (not sure, but probably <10 times) and each time tens of individuals. so that's quite a few compared to the other two, but still not a whole lot really, and i have yet to see them outside japan, so i personally still think of it as rare in that regard. maybe just me :D

and due to the confusion, it's still hard to say what exactly is p. palmas palmas. so who knows, maybe the real deal is still out there, or maybe what we have is it.

EDIT: oops hmmm the pic wasn't there before. anyway, you sure that wasn't an endli endli? looks like one to me.

i definitely agree that the p. bichir bichir is a rare piece. still dont know of anyone that has one in the states. well, at least with picture confirmation.

thanks for the replies........you really went out there for me on the rarest stuff.

I guess I need to be more realistic........what polypterus among the ones mostly kept are less common? Is it the delhezi (sp?)? I saw a green one from the Congo......can't remember the name going for about $50 for a 6" one.

Also, I'm looking for one that is compatible with my water conditions. Can these guys live in a pH in the low 8's?

Lastly, will these guys be looking to make a meal of a 3" moba juvie?
 
my tap water is 8.2 and relativly high kh/gh. atm i have 2 polypterus, after a decent accimilation both are fine. my ornate hides all the time, but the sengal doesnt mind coming out to play. about your smaller fish, they will eat anything they can catch and fit into their moth (so ive read), so, if you think its possible they can eat it, they probably can.
 
i dont know what bichirs are compatible with the increased ph. but if you are looking for the hard to find bichirs that you can not get at the lfs, try Toyin at rehobothaquatics.com. he is a vendor on this site also.

about tankmates... anything that can fit in the bichirs mouth is potentially in danger. lapradei, endlicheri, and weeksii have very big mouths.
