I don't know much about Jack Dempsey, is this a blue gene that could be successfully carried in the next generation, or is it too recessive?

You cant tell by looks if a jd is blue gene or not. Looks male and the only way to determine this is to breed it. If its fry grow anf you breed them there should be ebjds. Might have screwed that up somewhere towards the end but no way of physically telling

True...You can never tell by looking at a JD if it is a blue gene or not....
But this a very nice male specimen
 
There is absolutely no way to tell if a fish carries a recessive gene just by looking at it. If you did not purchase the fish from a reputable dealer of BGJD's, assume it is just a regular JD. Not a bad looking fish, but no way to discover its genetics through a picture on the internet.
