I just set up a 200g and looking to fill with southern and central cichlids. Average full grown should be 8-12". How many would be considered overstocking? Whats a good method to determine enough tank for enough fish?

There's more to it than just the size of the fish. You have to factor in their activity levels, aggression, mix of sexes, etc.

In general, though, I'd feel fine with five or six cichlids in that tank. If one pair breeds, though, it could get rough on the others.

thanks for the info! i have an orange pike, managuense, peacock bass, red devil and the only african that I feel can live in same water- five spot general. they are all 4-5" and live in harmony {at the moment}. based on your advise, i will sit back and let them grow!

you know your five spots well! i had to have my LFS special order. I have't seen them for sale in new england for 10 years. owner told me its because they tear eachother to shreds. mine is nasty but stays clear of bigger fish.
