If I missed a thread on this in the archives , please excuse me & I'd appreciate a link as to not bore anyone w/ this conversation. As someone who occasionally feeds RAW food (BARF DIET)To My Dogs & RAW fish & shrimp to My fish. what are some of the pro's & cons of adding raw food to ones water ? Are there any foods that You want to stay away from ? Which Do You like the best & why ?
Thanks in advance,
James.

If you're talking raw seafood from the grocery store, chances are the foods were shipped flash frozen and thawed at the grocery store (catfish, tilapia, squid, etc). This type of raw food is fine for your aquarium. Live seafoods may be fed if it's understood that the chance of introducing a parasite or disease is greater than when feeding out thawed foods.
As far as foods to stay away from...usually any prepared foods are to be avoided as are most pre-cooked seafoods. There are less nutrients in pre-cooked items, they break down fasterin the aquarium, and most fish don't approve of the spices used in the seafood 'boil' tanks.

Thanks for the advice, those are exactly what I've used......tilapia, catfish & even sushi a few times. How about any other meat ? fowl, beef, anything else anyone reccomends for any benefitial reason ? I like the Shrimp Myself & have thought of trying some of the live smaller LIVE shrimp they sell @ the asian markets near Me ? I've heard that most parisites from saltwater foods.....such as shrimp , dont have parasites that can live on a freshwater host or in fresh water.......period. Any truth to that ? I've just noticed the difference in Dogs when switching them to a RAW diet & thought about it as something I may want to do w/ my fish. W/ the Dogs I always freeze everything for a few days to kill anything & had figured to do the same for the fish , I'd love to feed some live stuff...... but I've lost too many fish to parasites before, so I havent fed live in a long time.
James.

I breed fish. So, I stay away from using avain and mammalian meats since the farms that raise these animals use different hormone treatments to get better yields from their stock. These hormones can impact natural spawning instincts in fish.

You can definitely use the live ghost shrimp and prawns from asian markets. Wish I had one near me.

I'm not going to make any guesstimates towards the feeding of raw foods to dogs. I just answer fish questions here. Perhaps another of our members may have tried this feeding regimen and can answer your question.

Naw....I'm good w/ the Dog thing. Thats No puzzle, I was just thinking about it in correlation to My fish. What You said makes sense about the other meats & the hormones.I dont call Myself a breeder , but have bred fish a few times & made the mistake of feeding food for color........which was full of them(Hormones) & produced alot of sterile fish in the process. Females that had ovarian tubes that didnt form well or drop @ all & Males that had strange genetalia that never formed right either.
Thanks For Talking To The New Jack,
James.
