so i have some florida spotted gar and i used to always feed them rosy reds and small goldfish( only if i there was no rosy minnows), any way i tried feeding the gar store bought shrimp and they loved it, they go crazy for it, so i want to get them on more shrimp and pellets becuase they love the cichlid pellets. now i have been buying shrimp rings wich are cooked shrimp, so my question is, what would be more nutritious and/or better for them, cooked shrimp or raw shrimp?

raw

Yes, raw. Cooked has less nutrients. My Floridas love raw shrimp and tilapia.

k cool. im sure that cooked does have less nutrience, i thought i would ask any way. they have been eating cooked for like a year and they are still growing fast and healthy, i have thick gars.

thanks

i hand feed mine with raw prawns. i hold it at the top of the water line and he comes and takes it out of my hand.

raw would definitely be more nutritious, but at the same time i have fed gars for years on cooked shrimp and have not seen any noticeable difference in growth or general health between feeding raw or cooked.

feeding a variety of foods is definitely a good idea, and if you have the time and resources to constantly supply raw shrimp to your fish then that is ostensibly the healthier choice. just bringing up the point that feeding cooked shrimp won't kill or necessarily be detrimental to them either.

good luck!--

yah i fed them raw shrimp for the first time today, they have been eating cooked for about a year now, it looked like they werent realy sure what to do with the raw shrimp, they were more hesitent feeding. and i think i need to wash it better lol.. my water was a little hazzy after feeding ooops

oh yah and does any know about feeding scallops? i know that in the wild gar would never encounter scallops, but i accidently grapped a bag that had shrimp and scallop mixture and so what do you think?
