Just got a little motoro ray, moved him in today. He's in a 55g growout while I finish my 350g plywood. I noticed earlier tonight that his slime coat seems to be extra thick. Could this just be stress from moving him?

Ph: 7.0
Soft water
0 nitrates
0 ammonia
0 nitrites
0 chlorine

Yeah, I've had it for 2 months, there's 2 bichir and an arowana in it. Nitrates are not registering on my strip tests. Although, maybe there's something wrong with my strips. There are 2 small algae spots on the back wall, one green and one brown. Could they be linked to this?

Its not Algae, I dont think... Nitrates are DEF. not suppose to be at 0.... around 25ppm is normal I think. What kind of water are you using? The 2 Bichirs could be picking on the ray making it stressed out.... Is it eating? We need to know everything to try to help you out bud

The ray is eating, he had some bloodworms last night. I used a different test kit and came up with ~15 ppm nitrates. I'm using Charlotte, North Carolina tap water treated and cycled. The bichir don't seem to be picking on the ray, but I haven't been staring at the tank 24/7 so i can't be sure of that. It's a 55 gallon tank with an Aqueon filter, 350 gallons per hour, with 2 carbon filters, along with an ammonia remover media pad and a nitrate remover media pad. Kinda worried about the algae could there be excessive phosphates in my tank?

Glad you tried another test kit, I used a good test kit and read over 60ppm, the dip strips showed a very low, negligible reading.

How soft is soft water? If too soft the ph will shift around and could be a slime coat issue....I expect it is fine thought and just stress of new tank.

Keep up the tests
