Friday- Shippment of filter cartridges, media, and misc arrives so I happily do a 60% water change since my Magnum 350 has been shut off for most of the week and I replace the Magnum's blue floss sleeve and fill it's media container with fresh diamond blend. Also install a new bio-wheel setup to the Magnum's output.

Saturday- Ray is breathing real fast and deep, curling the edges of his disc on and off. Test ammonia and it reads out .50ppm ( /facepalm for 60% WC and changing filter media at same time:screwy:). Later in the afternoon I do another ammonia test and it reads out to .75ppm on my API test kit so I do a 40% water change and the level drops to .50ppm. Dose the tank for 120gal worth of Stress Coat and hope for the best.
If you're still reading, thank you!:D

Sunday- Still .50 PPM so I decided to put one of my 75gals Emporor 400 media cartridges on top of the bubble disk in the 125gal. Within 8 hours or so the ammonia no longer registers on my test kit.

Monday- Ray still breathing real deep and not moving a whole lot, doesn't jump for food like usual. Later in the evening I dose the tank for 80gals worth of salt and put another 60gals worth of stress coat.

Tuesday- Ray still breathing abnormally, not moving much, ignoring food.

Is there anything else I can do? Was this "mini cycle" infact responsible for my rays behavior or is it freak coincidence and something else is wrong? I've skimmed through a couple pages of searching and haven't found similar conditions.

Relevant facts: As of now, Nitrates: 5-10ppm, Ammonia: not registering, Nitrite: 0
Tank has had fish in it for months.
Along side with the Magnum is a Eheim Classic 2217.

I really would appreciate input on this thread, for my ray's sake! My other threads are promptly ignored :(

wow that sucks! i know you know but never change or clean filter pads the same day as a water change! whats your temp? try adding more o2 to the tank. turn off its light for a week. add aquarium salt, just some quick thoughts

besides that, you may want to try putting some ammonia remover chips or maybe some purigen in your filter. i have both in mine i put it in after my tank cycled, its just to protect from mini cycles because you never know what may cause one

Thank you everyone for replying.

UPDATE: Swimming ever-so-slightly more, breathing pretty fast. Still not eating.

Haha I caused this cycle by adding new ammonia chips/activated carbon. I wonder how much more severe the ammonia spike would have been had it not been ammonia crystals I added but some other type of media. The Eheim has a little bit of crystals as well.

replacing media shouldn't cause any "mini" cycle, unless you change all of it. You should have some bio media in your filters other than the carbon/ammonia chips
