I was down checking the pool and all my fish and saw a barb laying on the bottom of the pool so i scooped it out. Do the barbs need to be cleaned before handling or anything? I looked at both rays and both have multiple barbs so do they shed them or something?

no need to clean before handling, and yes when they have two barbs they are getting ready to shed one of them.

The venom is in the sheath coating. If the sheath is gone then you can touch them without an issue. If the sheath is still on you can boil it off if you want.

I'm working on a collection myself, they shed about 3 times a year or so.

Boil it in hot water you can still get some toxins in you from handling it. Once boiled you can do anything with it. I have a few necklaces with barbs on it.

Well i hope its nothing bad because i havent boiled it but i will boil it now just to be safe. Im not sure how long it was laying on the bottom of the pool but i sure hope i dont get any toxins from it but now my anxiety will be of the wall. Would you be able to just absorb it? It wouldnt have to puncture you to get in?
