Hi there i have had rays for over 6 months now and i have just had an outburst of bacteial infection which has killed a discus, angelfish and a geophagus. One of my stingrays is fine but the other is a bit skinny and seems to be breathing heavily. they both still eat but not alot. i do regular 40% - 50% water changes weekly and have two large external canister filters. The water quality is fine ammonia 0. Nitrite 0. nitrate 0 and ph 7.2

I was just woundering if anyone could identify what could be wrong with my rays and help me to get them better again.

Cheers

1st. i would check to make sure that you have no ammonia or nitrite. Give us your readings.
2nd. make sure that you have either a power head at the surface of the water, or your canister filters outlets to face the surface of the water to keep it agitated. maybe add a air stone too. Could be lack of oxygen.
3rd.What is the temperature of the water?

you say bacterial, have you seen any other signs on your rays? Are they eating?

should have read it better. No nitrate is a sign of a un-cycled tank. You SHOULD have nitrate! Something is not right about your readings.

Did you put any chemicals in the tank when you had the bacterial infection? A fully cycled tank should never have 0 nitrates...I'm thinking that maybe something you put in the tank is giving you a false reading.

^^^ agreed. Did you just set up this tank? Did you let it cycle before you put fish in? Maybe you could give the rays to a friend or something till you get your tank straightened out before they die. Although that will stress them out too.

Are you using the test strips? If so, I would get the actual kit with the test tubes and the drop bottles. The strips arent as acurate.

Good luck!

no the tank was set up for 2 months before the rays were put in and its been running for 6 months and i do use the test tubes.

I have just recently treated the tank with a wormer as i thought it might be parasites but that wouldnt have affected the nitrates. i think the best thing to do would be to do more water changes even though im changing alot already.
