Quick question for a newbie. I am getting a ray real soon. A couple weeks or so. I have enough a 240 gallon aquarium with pool filter sand. Only tank mate is a arowana. He is about 15" okay here is the real questions ... ph. Ino indiana we have extremely hard water my phone is in the 8.0s is this okay? Also the gravel?
 
I believe you want to get the ray between 7.4-7.8 that's the range of ph. I'm pretty sure you can find an old post with the accurate information. I keep mine ray at a 7.4 but my tap water comes out at 7.4
 
I wouldn't sweat 8.0. I'm running roughly 8.4 with no issues. I wouldn't go with gravel, I like a large grain sand for the natural look or bare bottom for the ease of maintenance.

DB junkie DB junkie probably has a much better formulated opinion on the subject than me though.
