My female ray is hovering at the top of the tank near the outflow of my canister filter and in the bubbles of a bubble curtain. Is this normal? She used to stay on the bottom with the male during the day and would climb the walls at night. She still looks fine and comes down to eat with the male whenever I add shrimp for feeding. She seems to be healthy otherwise.

My tank parameters are: ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates n/a (no test kit), pH 8.2 but stable, temp. 83F. I have done a couple of 25% water changes this week and have added salt. The only thing I have done different lately is cover up the tank for a few days to combat an algae bloom. Could this have stressed the ray? I have stopped doing this and have a UV sterilizer on order for next week. I am also a little under filtered as my sump broke last week and I am using a Fluval 404 and 2 stacked hydrosponges (2 size 5 ones stacked on top of each other) with MJ1200 ph's for filtration. I have 2 xp3's on order as well. Extra aeration is provided by a Hiblow80 and 3' of air stones.

Seeing as she looks healthy and is eating, could she just be playing in the bubbles? When I first added the air stones she would play in the bubbles at the bottom. The only difference now is that she is at the top. Should I be panicing?:nilly:

rays do it all the time.... if u look down a couple posts you will see the same question asked with a vid

Yes, I see what you mean. I guess I was worrying for nothing as she comes down to eat with the other ray and stays near the bottom longer with the lights on. It's only with the lights off that she seems to like to move around in the bubbles at the top, just like the video I saw posted here. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised to see a fish swimming!

its normal...
