I've been entertaining the idea of a hystrix ray for a while (given their size). We don't have many privately owned fish stores in my area anymore, so coming across stingrays and predatory fish is a big deal for me.

I saw this little guy in a store. I don't know enough to ID it myself, but the lady in the store said it should max out around 12". Thoughts?

It is a retic and it is common for captive ones to stay around 12" or less. I have only seen one over 12"

Thanks fishdog. I'll do a bit more research on retics then. I prefer to buy locally when possible, so I'll take what I can find.

This guy is priced at $129 here. Not sure if that's a good price or not, but given our local lack of stingrays, I suppose its probably fair.

In terms of the tank setting, I'm hoping to put it in my 60"x18" with my sen. Bichir; young silver aro, and 6" abk. Thoughts?

I am not a fan of mixing bichirs with rays but others have had success. That tank size is fine for a few years. If that retic gets to 8" as long as it's tail is healthy it will probably touch front to back on the tank. Around that size I would look to upgrade. Big thing is see it eat before you get it as those kind can be very stubborn to eat anything when first brought in so you might have to fork out the cash and get some black worms shipped. That price is a touch high but if you bought one online for $50 and had it shipped you would be close to their asking price. Just remember with rays you cannot have enough filtration or water changes.

I would not mind buying a ray that did not eat as I have imported lots over the years and am use to handling that situation. As a new ray owner you do not want your first experience to blow up in your face with a ray that refuses to eat and eventually dies on you.

If you get it, I would recommend putting in a divider till it starts eating. I have had several over the years and all but one did great. It is hard getting them to eat. I always had good luck with night crawlers chopped super small. The ray will be stressed when introducing to the tank which is why I recommend the divider. That is completely up to you. Once it starts eating, it should do fine. Like FD said, filteration and WC.

Totally agree with fishdog I would make sure it is eating well before taking it home. This being your first ray make it as easy on yourself as possible. There are plenty of hobbyist with cb pups too I know KNH just had a nice litter. CB are so much easier in my experience I would start there

Either way GL and keep us updated on how it goes
