I'm not a ray guy, but I have a ray question. I just visited my LFS. They have 2 small rays. One is said to be a moto and the smaller one is said to be a "Teacup," which I understand to be only a generic name and is not a species. I recognized the ray that they're calling a moto, to actually be a moto. The markings and color are correct, but my question is about the other - - the teacup. The teacup is about 5 inches in diameter and is very dark. It appears to almost be a solid black with no markings. I don't have a pic, but does anyone know what species this might be?

could be almost any ray..... will need pics for sure.
what about the solid, black coloring at 5 inches? does that ring a bell? i know that some juvenile fish are often of a different color from their adult relatives. is that the case with rays, also? the baby moto resembled an adult moto, in color. leo's are black with white polka dots, so i did not think this solid black baby pup was a leo. any ideas? and i apologize for lacking a pic.

If its for sale as a teacup, then most likely it is a reticulated ray. They are the most common sold under that name. It could possibly be a yepezi type, but unlikely.

But are the retic pups ever solid black? I've never seen solid black retics.

I was just trying to get a sense of what this critter is. It just puzzled me and of course, the store personnel have no idea. They call it a "Teacup." I might go back and get a pic. They only want $55 for it.

I would bet on retic. At the price, and with them calling it a "teacup". Retics patterns vary, it might just be dark at the moment, and have a heavy pattern. Are you sure it was solid black, and not just dark? What color was the substrate it was on?

I can't say for sure that it was BLACK. I'd call it dark and I could not see any type of pattern and it was on white sand. I'll assume it was a retic. Thanks to all for your help.

pick it up and/or take pics:popcorn:
