I've had a reticulated stingray (Potamotrygon orbignyi) for a while now, and he has been doing great until lately. Someone must be picking on him because I've noticed his stinger seems to be gone (I know they shed them but this looks ripped off), he hasn't been eating as well as he used to, and he's showing some color fading as well.

I have enough room to set up a 30 gallon (maybe a 40 breeder) for him and I was wondering what you guys though if I put just him in the 30 or 40. Do you think that would be enough room for a little while until I get my tubs up and runnig?

Also, would you recommend using a shallow layer of sand in this quarantine tank or do you think I would be better off going bare?

Any other quarantine/recovery tips would be greatly appreciated as well.

Just to give you some details:

- Disk size: 6" (purchased at 3")
- Tank size: 150 gallons
- Tank mates: Spotted Gar, 2 Jade Gobies, Marbled Pim, S. Jurupari, 2 M. Uranoscopas, Lapradei Bichir.
- Chemestry: NH3 - 0.00, pH - 6.8, Temp - 80 degrees, Nitrite - 0.00, Nitrate - 10 ppm
- 50% Water changes are done every four days.
- Food: Mainly worms (Dilly, trout, and crawlers)

Thanks for your help.

I am kind of torn, I would more then likely go with a sand bottom so the ray can hide and feel safe during recovery. I would use melafix on the ray to help with healing and prevent any infections to set in. I would go with the 40 breeder. What size is the ray? keep the temp warm like 82, and use the tank water that it came in from so that there is no more stress on the ray then is necissary. Maybe add some aquarium salts to the water as well. Have you observerd any agression to the ray? I would be worried about the poly, tho I don't know much about the gobys if they would pick on the ray at all.

You should move the ray to a seperate tank by himself, The 30-or 40 breeder should be fine for alittle while to get him going and healthy. Sooner the better also. Add some aquarium salt and raise the temp to 86.

Thanks guys.

My girlfriend actually caught the culprit...it's the gobies that are going after him. She saw them grab his tail and the other tried to get part of his disk but he was able to slip under the driftwood.

I think I'm just going to go to Home Depot after work and get one of their 120 gallon tubs and use that. I figure I might as well get something bigger just incase he ends up having to stay their longer than planned.

I plan on treating with salt and raising the temp to treat him. I'm going to use the sand I have and hopefully speed up the cycle on this bad boy.

Well it looks like the indoor stingray pond will be up and running quicker than I thought it would be.

I'll post some pics once it's done.

Thanks again.
