ray question??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i had 2 FW rays. dont remember what kind i would have to look them up im my book that i dont have with me. they were (reticulated something or other) brown with black markings. they had died and i felt realy bad becaus they where a gift. cant get more because i live in utah and they are illegal to keep hear (dont know why) :bs: . they basicly emaciated themselfs as far as i could tell. they refused to eat anything i fed them. ghost shrimp, blood worms, redwriglers, shrimp pellets, choped night crawlers, ect. they where cept it a 55 gal between 72-80 F and the ph was 7.8-8 i tride to get lower but i could not due to water conditions and no ro unit. they where called tea cups but i found that is what they call babay rays. any ideas why they died?

it sounds like your rays were occelated rays and the reason they died is poor water quality and chemistry. the ph was way to high and your water was probaly to dirty you could lower the ph and get a better filter that is for a much bigger tank, i would use 3 ac 500 or emperor 400s. look on liveaquaria.com they have some fw rays 4 sale and they ship anywhere. :grinyes:

sephir, if you have a water test kit, give us your water parameters.
If you dont, its paramount for every ray keeper to have a water test kit.

I would also recommend against getting teacup rays in the future..
these rays are so small that they die because of stress easily. I see them
in batches in local lfs here dying everyday and i know the water is perfect.

Good lesson here, I think. Don't ever give someone a living organism (especially an exotic one) as a gift without finding out if it can be cared for first.

4 year old thread bump :D

tank was to small for two rays to be in. The water quality prob got bad way to fast and stressed them out

Yeah; FBF's are good for that, but nothing can do the job like water volume and footprint.
