I need little more info on rays (leopoldi)

1. what kind of sand do i need to use? can i use southdown, play sand ,or get sand from pet store?

2. can i house 2 in a 220 as adults without being crowded? i DONT want to keep 2 and than have to find a home for one when its full grown.

3. how deep does the sand have to be 1 - inches?

4.how big do they get full grown? i read 24 inches , not sure if its a good species to put in a 220?

ANY info would be great, thanks for ur time.

no that tank will not be big enough if the ray reaches a 24"disc you gotta add the tail too. a 480 would be a good tank for some leos 8x4x2 now im sure they can be housed in smaller tanks but that would be a great tank for 2 adults for a 220 i would go with some of the smaller species of rays

That tank is to small for leos. I have heard 30in for feamales. Also where do you plan on getting them since they are very hard to get right now, let alone expensive. You should try your hand at a less expensive ray and see how you do with that.

You should also pick up the book The guide to freshwater stingrays by Dr. Rhichard Ross. Good book, to learn about rays.

Also as far as substrate goes, it can be as deep as you wan't it. As long as the sand doesn't have sharp grains like black tahiti moon sand or doesn't contain silica it should be fine.
