there must be some way of checking what levels the quotas are at or the exporters would have no chance and be going on blind luck for catches etc.

from what i heard, last year in the later months the quotas were full and there were no rays being exported. this year ive heard that the rivers have been very high for most of the year so catches have been low ( and so affect quotas ) so i was wondering how full they are this year as were about halfway though the year and i thought i would ask the question to see if anyone knows where to find the info.

it would be interesting to see and may be useful to know too. it cant be kept a secret because of the sheer nature of it. but that said, i still dont know how to find it.

so where is it ? anyone know how to find the ray quotas information for the current year ?

It's most likely not quotas like everybody seems to think.
More like hunting or fishing tags you apply for .

Say they give a yearly quota of 1000 Leopoldi rays. I think that means they give out 1000 tags .their won't be a weight in station !
If your the last guy in and the 1000th ray was just brought aboard "ohh sorry gotta put those ones back" lol
Nah I'd imagine you apply for tags or licenses special permit for that fish? Just like up here in Canada your aloud to apply for a tag to keep one walleye per year out of selected lakes your license number goes into a draw and if seleceted you must pay additional fees than they send a tag out to you that must be present when your transporting that fish if you keep one. But brazil won't be as complex not even close. Even after all the quotas are filled I bet some extra cash will still get you what ever you want

sounds like it could work but im not sure about the "tags" idea. i think with cod on the english coast they use quotas but they can apply for more in certain circumstances or find out if there is any quota available.

even so if your a fishery and you buy 750 tags and use them all or you fill 750 pieces of your *allocated* 750 quota ( of a potential 5000 pieces allocated to that species ) and then you want to catch or have already caught more who would you find out if there were any tags or quota left ?

from what ive read the quotas are not always filled anyhow as the fishing conditions mean people just cant get to the locations to catch the fish however on some occasions ( i think like last year ) where the rivers are quite low and mean that the quota is able to be filled completely ( i recently read a document saying similar when searching for the cites quotas ) .

someone must know for sure what happens regarding the quotas.

The thing is so many people are breeding don't think many people will be interested in wild caught anymore unless the prices are much lower than captive bred they why bother taking the risk

Lots of fresh blood has already enter the captive breeding project there is no need for wild caught for a few years

The exporters made a killing on super high prices to boost the breeders stock people won't pay top dollar anymore for wild stock

To tell the truth some breeders are putting out pups that look better than wild stock

I think the high prices are over now

Cod are commercially fished lol millions of pounds a year lol you can't compare . It is a tag or license system. Sure anybody can catch a Leopoldi but try and ship it... But if that's not the answer your looking for than good luck. Contact ibama in brazil they set quotas and heavily regulate and inspect every shipment. They allow only so many per year for the trade. How else would they do it

Fisherman catch the rays than exporters buy the rays and ship them out.who ever gets the licenses or permits or tags I don't know. Right now the quota is zero. No rays being exported from brazil according to an exporter in brazil I recently talked to.

thanks for the information anders , ive been looking at CITES for information so it looks like ive been looking in the wrong place.

the most recent document i can find is this one : http://www.ibama.gov.br/institucional/perguntas-sobre-raias-de-aguas-continentais

it shows quotas and how to apply for shares of the current quota system. They seem to have been reduced alot from the last quota list i saw so i can see why the quotas are getting filled more easily.

it shows leo and henlei are banned from export with quotas set for other rays. i havnt yet found any mention of a quota review to be announced anytime soon but as i mentioned this quota list is much lower than the other one i could find on the cites pages.

if anyone comes accross anything interesting please feel free to point it out. :)

for reference this is the cites quota list that i found :
