In the Water with Monsterfish
My buddy doesn't know much about forums or MFK so I promised I'd ask. He has a Motoro ray and he says that the tail looks like it is drying up. It looks like it is thinner than his other ray. I am sorry guys I wish I could have seen it in person to tell you guys what it looked like but he's back east. He sent me this one picture if it helps. Any help would be appreciated. The LFS where he bought the ray says that its fine and that just happens. I don't know that sound fishy to me.

I asked him his waters parameters and he is supposed to get me that info. As soon as he calls me with it I will post. Thanks again.

Looks like a fungus. Very common.

I would refuse to do buisiness with a LFS after them saying that it is normal. It is not.

Tell him to make sure his water is top notch, bump the temp up to 86-88,and add salt. Sadly the damage will not heal. At least you can try and stop it.

I have had that happen before. Do exactly what JD7 says and it should be fine. Tail may shorten a tiny bit but should heal fine as long as you keep it from spreading by adding salt and turning the temp up to 86 or so asap

ill tell him. What ratio of salt should he add. How much per gallon and how much of a water change and how often.

My question would be why is this starting. Any chance there is a fish in with the rays that is picking on the tail? Many fish that wont normally bother rays will keep a wound open...What else is in with them?

He has a small royal pleco and some tiny cichla. The last pick he sent me they looked to be about 2 inches. and the pleco about 3 inches. There in a glass 200 gallon if that means anything.

:screwy:Dumb question but can he use the salt that he uses for his salt water tank or does it have to be that Dr whatever aquarium salt?

Thanks again guys.

Don't use Marine salt, it's bad.. use Dr Whatever.. :D Aquarium Salt.

The pleco could be trying to eat the tail over and over every night thinking it is a worm.. The pbass might do the same thing, thinking they are predating on a worm.

More than likely it's water quality and/or was a pre-existing condition from this "knowledgeable" LFS.. The tail tip fungus is usually caused from rays being packed to tightly into undersized shipping bags, in which their tail protrudes up and out of the water, dries out, falls off, becomes damaged, and usually results in fungus..
