Ray tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 2 oscars with my rays. But then again, I have a large tank, so they don't see a whole lot of each other. If you have a passive oscar, and a big enough tank, you can pull it off. But its not with out risks, so have a plan B if things don't work out.

Best of luck.

well his sig says 500 gallon keeper. and im guessing you are going to want to put the ray in your 540L tank. thats a pretty small tank to be keeping a ray in unless its very shallow. so start thinking tank first then see how it goes. and if they fight then you have your 540 to put your oscar back in.

i'm think of bigger tank in the next few months so thats why i had some questions about rays, i know my current set up is to small and to be honest the larger set up im looking at prob wont cut it in the long run either...looking a an 8x2x2 but thinks for the input....i'll put rays back in the dreaming pile for now

My Female Marbled Motoro is in with an Oscar atm, no problems so far but my oscar is very timid and the ray is a lot bigger.

well when you get the 8x2x2 then you can put rays back into reality. that tank will be large enough for a long time if not life for some rays. especially the males of some types.

An 8x2x2 is a very large tank for many people to accommodate in their house and jeffers is right many male rays of various species will be comfortable in there providing good husbandry techniques and adequate filtration is provided. However its not only a compatibilty issue when choosing tank mates for rays,Oscars for instance are big eaters so when they defecate create lots of waste which puts a huge strain on the biological filter leaving the whole system unstable, there simply isnt enough water volume in a tank of this size to cope with huge and sudden blasts of ammonia entering it,remember Stingrays once acclimatised have huge appetites, tanks of the size above are relatively small for such fish so shouldnt be over crowded......be happy to observe your ray or rays, these are truly unique fish which deserve respect.
When that 500 gal tank arrives then sure its nice to see a few different shapes drifting about, but choose tank mates carefully, its not just whether your choice of fish is going to attack the rays, ask yourself, can i get the food past the other occupants,if your having to throw twice as much food as you would like to in any one feed just so that the rays get some then at some point you could run into trouble...especially in smaller aquaria.

I live in a fairly new apartment with concret floors so the weight wouldln't be a problem....biggest problem would be getting it in the place.....got the 6x18 in pretty easy with just one mate but 8x 2 would be alot harder to get in to my place. If i got the new tank i wouldnt just rush out and get a ray i would make sure the tank was in purfect order first, the tank would have a sump of course.
tank mates would be my alreasy existing stock.

what set ups do u guys have for your rays?

thanks for the advice
