Hey:

I did a 25% water change two days ago, all went well, the two silver dollars and the motoro ray are quite happy. THe water change was the first in about 2.5 weeks since adding the ray.

THe ray i know produces a lot of waste, wouldnt beleive what i sucked out today after only 2 days since the water change.

My question is the water i take out i replace it with fresh water, and of course i neutralize the chorine etc before hand. If i do this every few days the amount of water i am taking out and replacing every time, will it stress out the ray, doesnt seem to bother him so far. I make sure the temp is within a degree of what the tank temp is and i neutralize the water as well.

Or should i just wait and do it once a week?? Seems to be a lot of waste every few days from 1 ray, cant wait to see what happens when i add a female when she arrives!!

One other thought would be, if i scoop out the waste every few days and then do a water change once a week or so, would that work as well.

Regards Novaman

Frequent water changes are highly unlikely to stress your ray.

If the waste is building up in the substrate that much there may be other things you can change up too.. Less depth of substrate, less feeding if the water is leftover food, increased mechanical filtration etc.

Yes you could vacuum out the mess and therefore replace less of the water, that's likely to work fine too, just keep an eye on pH and NitrAte readings to be sure you're still changing enough water overall.

Ok thanks i will do that.

The waste is not much in the way of left over food, mostly from his pooping a lot which i would take as a good sign, he is eating well and therfore the waste.

The silver dollars help with extra food left over like bloodworms and mysis shrimp etc.

I will be making more of mechanical filtration in the next two days, i have currently a rena canister filter and a hang on the back water fall filter, and have an air pump pumping through 2 air wands,so lots of filtration and water circulation for now. The water is cystal clean.

I've been doing 1-2 water changes everyday for the past week with two new motoro rays and an incompletely cycled tank and they seem very healthy. So as long as you dechlorinate the water you should be sweet imo.

Hello,

What is size of your tank ?
