Hey guys,

I Have a 4x2.5x2.5 Tank with a FX5 and 2x 2000lph filters on it and it currently houses Aus Natives. The bio load isn't much at all and i only need to do a water change every 3 weeks or so. The filtration in the Fx5 is just sponges i have no Bio media in the tank at all. I'm thinking if i get another canister just for Bio media and keep the current filtration i have, do you think it would be suitable for a Ray?

I have been told this and that from everyone so far, so thought id chuck a thread up to see what you all think.

Looking forward to your replies

If you are getting a Ray bro you are going to need a lot of bio media as Rays create a hell of a lot of waste, I would run the FX5 with the sponges they come with and fill the baskets full of Bio Media. Then if you want extra mech filtration just add a Eheim 2217 or similar and fill it up with sponges and wool. On the other hand looking at your tanks foot print this will only house a Ray for a short period of time...

Hey mate,

Yeah im aware of the footprint.
So you think it would be better to have the FX5 with Mech and Bio? personally i think the FX5 would be much better for mechanical Filtration and get another canister purely for Bio, the FX5's are marketed more for Mechanical filtration imo, compared to eheim which hold a couple more litres for bio but dont have much output. (I don't mind being corrected on this)

I already have the FX on Mech filtration and it does the job alot better than i expected, i have tried it with bio and i found it slowed the flow rate down (Which i didnt like) so i never really used bio or needed it. So to creat alot of Bio media im thinking of getting another Canister purely for Bio.....

Still looking for opinions peeps :P

Cheers,
Cam

Yea I would keep the fx5 on mech and get another filter like an eheim for bio. Or maybe a wet/dry instead of a canister for bio? Your most likely gonna have to do more frequent water changes since rays will be producing alot of waste. Maybe fill the other filters with bio aswell?

I have had my rays for only two days but my god to they can produce waste!!! all they do is eat and pooh!
I keep alot of fish and nothing has compared to a ray yet.. it's like having 10 HUGE goldfish in a 2 foot tank!

I read alot about the waste issue, but i cant see it in my tanks. But maybe i have good filtration that takes it pretty fast. I have 4 10 inch motoro in 200gallon and i barely ever se any poo..
