Just wondering what everyone uses as heaters for their ray tanks. I've been successful for the past 7 mths and now it seems my heaters arent heating up my tank like they used too. I'm afraid to put them too high since one of my rays recently burned itself when I raised the temp by 3 degrees.

I take it you don't have a sump you can put it in. Otherwise make yourself a guard out of some pvc so they can't touch the heater.

Get an in line heater

Unfortunately no sump. I like the idea of the inline heater.

Do you currently use one of have good reviews of them?? How consistent are they with temp and would a 300w be good enough for a 180g tank??

Pet solutions has a good 300 watt inline that I have used before. If your tank has over flows put the heater inside it. I did this on my 200 gallon and throttled my valves back to keep them full of water. Another option is the sump which you do not have. Final option would be to build a pvc cover with holes in it. That is my least favorite as it does not look good. I would run two 300 watt heaters for that size tank. I always run two on my systems.

Thanks for the info. I'll give the two 300w inlines a shot. Are they pretty consistent with holding the temps throughout the whole tank??

I use the heating element and guard from these heaters with a reef keeper controller instead of the one that come with them. Nothing wrong with the controller that's included, just don't like the 2 degree temp swing they have. Heating elements and guards work great.

It will keep it very even. As long as your pumps have good flow

Cost wise build a cover. Get a couple heaters. Inline heaters are more expensive

When your working with rays money shouldn't be held above the rays well being. Using a pvc cover will restrict the effectiveness of the heater
