How large of a tank would be required to keep a saltwater ray and lionfish species together? Any combination of species..

Is it even possible?

Miles - It is definatly possible. Some people do not recommend the two species be held together in captivity however it has been done and can be done. I would just recommend you keep an eye out for any aggression thay may occur and seperate them if such behaviour is sighted. As far as a tank size goes, I would just make sure its large enough for the Ray, it will then be large enough for the Lion.

I have experience with Lionfish and Freshwater Rays..

I am looking into setting back up a Lionfish species tank, but was thinking how cool it would be to have my favorite 2 fish togethor.

I would obviously research sizes and appropriate species for the tanks im working with, which would be either 180g or 375g..

My curiousity is if the overly active stingray has the potential to injure himself or the lionfish with this hyperactivity.. Not worried about the Lionfish botherng the Rays, but rather the rays swimming over and around live rock and not realizing a Lionfish was hiding and poking themselves..

With that said.. I figured I would need a ton of huge open space for the ray to swim, and some live rock caves in the corners for the lionfish..

Id make a sandy spread out bottom for the ray to feel free, but in the center or to one side i would make a sweet cave out of live rock for the Lion. Obviously i would go with a volitan if i was trying to house a ray with it. But if i could choose i would have a Radiata, i love them.

Good luck, i hope to see some pictures in a few months.

go with a volitian, you want a lion that will swim up in the tank, avoid the bottom dwelling ones like the fu man chu. it is totally possible just keep an eye on them and i would put the ray in first and let it get settled first.

Between the 2 tank size choices - go with the 375 gallon. There are many SW rays that can stay in a 180 with a Lion. The 375 will give you enough room to have some LR for the Lion, and lots of swimming space for a fairly small ray such as the Cortez, Bulls-eye or Yellow Stingray.

yep, go with a volitan
