My two 14" Leo's love the additional aeration provided by 2 x Maxijet 1200LPH powerheads, but they will insist on pulling off the impellor guards and chewing on the outlet pipes.
I have had to superglue the plastic strainers to the intake and put an additional bit of stronger piping on the outlet or they just chew and pull bits off. I'm amazed at the strength of thier jaws, the outlet pipe is 1mm thick plastic and they just chew it until it starts coming apart !

Now, I can mount the powerheads behind glass but that would look unsightly on the front face of the tank, does anyone have any ideas on how to protect the powerheads and minimise the risk to the Rays of swallowing broken plastic ?

Thanks

Martin

Rays can sense electrical current in the water and are likely investigating the powerheads for food.

You need some powerheads with dome casings or full plastic mesh casing around them.. the Fluval 3 or Fluval 4 come to mind.. there are a few other nice ones out there that should be durable. One new one, forget the name, uses a magnet attachment on the outside of the tank, very nice.. Anything you can easily dissemble with your hands (twist off impeller cover) is probably not suitable..

Not surprising to hear, my rays even go after the glass glue and have bitten bits and pieces off now and then. They bite the aeration tube, filter tube and each other. Just rays being rays I guess...
