Hi' just wonderng if its normal for rays to prefer feeding from the surface?
my marbled motoro and henlei x mantilla always seem to prefer floating pellets over the sinking ones.

I think they "prefer" wherever they are used to being fed. My pond rays smell food and they immediately start bobbing thier heads out of the water on the edge of the pond cause that is where they are used to being fed. Rays in the tanks don't bother, as thier food always ends up on the bottom.

i was just wondering actually how'd you get the ray used to feeding from the side of the pool? I mean, doesnt it always float to the bottom anyways so why do they start to bob their heads up the sides?

Have you ever heard of "floating" pellets? Duh!

ya thanks, i feel like my rays are so dumb that they dont know food has to come from the top to sink to bottom.

Hand feed them. Pretty soon they realize what's up.... They aren't dumb animals. Mine see people standing by the edge of the pond and they know why there's people there.... FOOD.

I had a Jag that would spit water out on to the floor if there was comotion in the basement for extened periods of time without her getting fed.

really eh, smarter then i thought. i can feed my retic but not my motoro, still wouldnt have given them the credit to learn whats up

Doesn't happen overnight... lol The 2 that I have that regularly hand feed at the surface are 13 and 6 years old. Both have been captive for a long time. Most of mine in the pond do but there's 2 that refuse to leave the bottom. They WILL suprise you after a while. I have a juvie male that's figured out that bangin rocks on the bottom of the tank can get him fed. Funny thing is he only really does it when people are on the couch in front of his tank.

I bet almost all the veteran ray keepers here will tell you that rays are much smarter then they get credit for.

ha ha my big female chews on the bottom of the tank (acrylic) She must know how bad it pisses me off. It makes a loud crunching sound!!
to stop her i will feed her. I always feed with lights on. I can turn off the lights and she will stop. I think it is her way of telling me to feed her more or she will chew the tank apart!
