i have very minimal exeprience with wild caughts i have only ever owned a few and most were already acclimated and here for a while before i bought them.

i am wondering what signs of a ray passing a hook is.i have never found any hooks in my tanks but just wondering if crazy swimming and flaring up like a cone shape than freaking out.than completely calms down ????

anybody know of a cheap diy idea to scan the ray for metal??

how long does it take for a ray to pass a hook.

not alot of info floatin around on this subject...

i would think that a fishing hook with a barb would be near impossible to pass though.... and i doubt they use barbless hooks but i could be wrong

I was always under the impression that fishing hooks would dissolve in the fishes digestive tract leaving little to pass and doing little harm to the fish.

most fishing hooks are coated so they dont rust and break when you are realing a fish in.only the very cheapest hooks are not coated.who knows??i dont have any idea how the digestive track would be able to dissolve metals.maybe organics like fish bones but not metals.i have seen pictures of trout passing hooks through the anus very disturbing and painfull looking.

i am a avid fisherman and i think i would actually have to look hard to find cheap hooks.they just dont make them anymore??maybe in brazil and hopefully for the sake of the fish.

also i really think the chemical reaction alone of metal dissolving would probably kill the ray.it would get into its blood stream if its inside of it right??just a thought

barbed hooks can pass through a fish if its unlucky.like i said i have seen pictures ,probably better off dying than pooping a barbed hook

there re several ways to know.
a decent metal detector or ultrasound ...
wilds will pass a hook fairly easily, or it will encyst and still be relatively harmless.
They sometimes use biodegradable hooks there too.
The hooks they use are fairly small. Most rays are hooked, like all fish, in the lip/mouth.
I don't think your issues are cause by that.

issues are water adjustment or bad case of parasites, leaning towards water ,rays will still eat when they have parasites

I don't think behaviour would be a hook.

I guess a hook would only pass if one way round, if not then it would do what it was designed to do an hook in to something along the way...I used to see some very rusty hooks when I used to fish but I used to re-use hooks all of the time so I think their lifespan would generally be very long.
