My ray is starting to grow another stinger. Is that an indication that the old one will be falling out soon.

Also I was curious if anybody knows if you can be invenimated by a discarded stinger. I know it could still hurt you but does it still contain any venom after it has been shed.

It is the tissue between the skin and the boney spine that contains the venom.

You could become envenomated if you puncture yourself with a spine that still has the sheath in tact.

The stinger is just like our finger nails; hence, no venom.

The venom come from the slim that coats around it together with it whole body.

You can either wash off the slim or sun dry it.
After that, its ok.

sure hope that helps.

i'm no ray expert but i believe once the stinger iwas already shed-off then there will be no more venom left on it. just my opinion.

didn't know rays shed their stingers, learn new things everyday in mfk.

Rays are in the shark family, and are completely cartiligous fish.. The only 'bones' they regenerate are Stingers, just like Shark's with their teeth. Just like Sharks and their teeth, a Stingray will regenerate thousands of stingers in it's lifetime!

You need to dry the stinger properly even if it has fallen off. Ive read and in my experience that a stinger can still have some venom in it. I was mildy scratched once
while playing with it and my fingers somehow felt numb.

I did the same thing. It did not hurt, but it tingled a bit.

just a little question about stingers shedding. her new stinger does not seem to want to fall out. I was wondering in this is normal. I have had her for two years and usually her old one falls out a lot sooner.
