Ok everyone, need some opinions and knowledge here. In the why a pond vs a tank thread me and Elasmofreak started a discussion on ray sizes. Rather then derail futher I thought I would start it again here.

Im my experiance, which I will admit is limited, I have heard of several rays that stay under 3 and a half feet. Elasmofreak had stated that only one species stayed under this size and it was a true teacup ray.

As far as I know, there are many rays that stay under that size, such as
retics
histrix
humerosas
motoros
Socbia
p14
possibly leos
possibly henlii

Now I also know of a few that get bigger then that such as
tigers
flowers
ceja
coly

Im just looking for what everyone thinks about this. I personally have never heard of a retic or hisrix over 20", but that does not mean they do not exist. So, if you can provide some pictures, with a tape measure in them would be a great help, or anything for size compairson. Thanks everyone

I buddy of mine got a histrix a while back, well turns would its not a histrix and it grew to be about 3 ft. Lucky he had a 900 gallon 11x4' tank, lol. I think thats accurate but my experience is also limited. Motoros better not get over 3.5 ft, lol.

lol, we still dont know but my opinion that its a flower ray with poor coloring and pattern that got labled as a histrix.

there are plenty that stay under that size.

infact, even those that are known to grow 3 feet or more takes years and lots of food to get that big.

therefore, a ray that's bigger than 2ft in diameter is very uncommon (unless you're visiting a zoo or something).

when was the last time you heard of a 3ft ceja ray?

.... haha ill take some 48inch motoros. and maybe a 48inch retic... that is huge. if anyone has ever seen one of these you must post pics. cause thats just not something you see.... haha

I thought it was one of those that gets that big. Idk, a couple of the small eyed rays do get that big.

yeah, they get big.

but when or where have you seen one that's actually that big in a home aquarium??

you have to remember that "maximum" size is usually "exceptional", but "usual".

which means, if the world record for a ceja ray is 4ft in diameter, that's an exceptional fish... you won't go out to the Amazon and catch ceja rays that size everyday.

3.5'????

I want someone to post a picture of a potamotrygon ray in any aquarium that is more than 36" in diameter.

I believe Andreas has a picture on his website of a large motoro in Germany that is around the 30" mark. It is in a public aquarium with thousands to tens of thousands of gallons of water.

I have a 19" female motoro and she is a monster. She is roughly 7 years old.

I have seen 26" castexi in a public aquarium that were unbelievably huge. They were the largest potamotrygons that I have ever seen.

They get big but, people have a tendency to exaggerate and over estimate size.

24" rays are not that common.
