RBP growth rate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
depending on how u care for them, they average about a month an inch til they hit 6inches, then they slow dramatically til they hit about 10-12 inches... somewhere between the first year and half to 2 years. after that they jus get thick or stay the same. do frequent water changes, feed a variety. i noticed with my rbp, shrimp and hikari gold pellets really brought out the red

It would depend on your tank conditions, the amount you feed, and the welfare of the fish, but i agree with ethnics

As said, depends on the environment you keep them in.
But if you are a good hobbyist like other members of MFK, you can expect up to two inches in the first month, and then a month an inch until they reach 6-8 inches. Then they slow down a hell of a lot. But in time to come, you will look back on these 12 inches beasts and think it was not to long ago they were just 1 inch. They are dfinably fast growers!

Also expect some casualties of cannibalism at their current young age/size. When buying small red bellies, always buy more than you intend to keep in the future.
Unless you get lucky with your lot.

How many did you buy, any picture?

yeah, i noticed a 2-3" growth spurt in the first month to month and a half. now there jus gettin fat but i only had them since september. i didnt kno about the cannibalism when i purchased my shoal, but i guess i am one of the lucky ones, i bought 6 at fry size. clear n tiny. all 6 survived and are now between 4-5". a month ago i went to the guy i got my fry rbp from n grabbed 3 more to add to the shoal which worked out great with zero deaths.

I got 15 of them, they're currently growing and eating shrimp in a cycled 55g.

Now now, before you go all "it's too small" on me, I bought them because I knew i'd lose some and I intend to go bigger later on :)

I'll try to get some pics later.

go bigger later? or have a bigger tank waitin for ur final shoal? there's a chance you'll lose some but not all. and when you say "later" you mean in 2 months? because thats how long it'll be before those 15 rbp are to big for that 55g.

when i had my first 6rbp, i started them in a 10gal tank. they were so damn small. 2 weeks later they all went in a 30gal. 2 weeks later they went in a 100gal... if u want proper growing rates, put them in the bigger tank. my buddy kept 12rbp in his 50gal and mine blew his away after 2 months. his were still 2" and mine were pushing 3.5 which is a noticable difference in rbp's size

piranhas are slow growers if you ask me... and i never said it was ur first time with piranhas. i saw ur first post saying its been a while. so i was jus offering my tips or opinions for optimal growth and health... regardless your ur own fist keeper. so no matter what i say doesn't matter anyway.
