Just wondering how intelligent red belly piranhas are compared to other fish? I'm feeling pretty low as I've just had to get rid of my life long pacu friend, and was wondering how the intelligence compared between the red belly pacu and red belly piranha?

I think what you're probably looking for is personality rather than intelligence. Most rbp are pretty shy fish overall, although in my current stock of 5 there are two that will swim up and beg for food.

Rbp do seem to be extremly aware of their enviroment, not sure where they rack up to a pacu tho..

Interesting thread and I would love to hear more opinions about it..

Like ballin said, there may not be many scientists/biologists in this section, but opinions are always worth reading.

I would assume they are intelligent fish because of their skittishness. They make an escape whenever they feel they are in danger. IME, they know when they are the predators, and know when they are being preyed upon.
Their hunting methods, fleeing methods, and over all survival instinct makes me assume they are an intelligent fish.

Are there fish out there have have greater intelligence? Yes.
Are they the dumbest? No.

Ive been a life long central american cichlid keeper and as a change a few months ago I got 6 piranha.

Comparing cichlids to piranha I noticed and got to experience that these fish balance their comfort level of of one another. If one scares they all scare. However this only last for the first 2 weeks after they settled in to their home they were waiting for me at the side of the tank waiting for their sinking color bite pellets. Give them plastic plants , I had a big ball of plastic vines, they were the security blanket for them. If you get babies they have a impressive growth rate, that was noce for me as the last decade Ive kept convicts and HRP's and there soooooooo slow when it comes to growth.

I only kept them for about 7 weeks then I had an unexpected trip out of the country so they went back to the fish store. They are agressive and hungy feeders when they are young and it wasnt fair to leave them for week with no food.

My quick sum up is that these little fish I found excellent and I learnt more in those few weeks about fish than the last 3 years. They really gave me a hobby rebirth and the first impression info you hear about piranhas off tv doesnt hold up the same compared to the piranhas in your home tank!

Great little fish, if their legal to keep in your home area give them a try.

I don't consider the fight or flight instinct a sign of intelligence, especially when it auto pilots on flight

How so? I consider survival an intelligent trait in animals. If you can survive, you were the smarter of the two.

I think it's a natural instinct that they're born with. I have a hard time associating an exaggerated sense of fear and danger as intelligences, even if it helps keep the species alive
