as I have know Red Bellied Piranhas and Red Bellied Pacus are like cousins.....

can they be kept in a same tank ???

Maybe if tank large enough, same size fish and very well fed...maybe for a while. The piranha will eat fins out of the pacu, especially at a younger age. Personally I would not risk a pacu with a bunch of piranhas, they would eventually try a bite and then you can watch the feeding frenzy.

In the wild these species mix together for mutual advantages, but in a tank everything is different...

They live in the same environment and both Pacus and Silver Dollars try to blend in while younger – eventually becoming food.

That is pretty much what I said. Also look on the forums there was a post of a Discovery Channel movie on piranhas, good place to learn on the fish...

when i was getting back into fish about 5 years ago i was given a 6'' RB pacu and added some 2'' natts.
the pacu eat them so i gave it away.
i also did not know they got huge so a good thing really.

Yep, big pacu eat little piranha and larger piranha eat pacu.

we have had 3 rbp's since the beginning of summer and added a just ever so slightly smaller pacu about 2 weeks ago in a 55 gallon tank. the first night, he got a nibble on his tail fin, but since then, the pacu seems to be blending in with the rbp's just fine. he swims with them, he eats with them, he even stole a pinkie away from em and tried his best to eat it. he can't shred it up like they can, but he sure tried. was kinda funny to see.

i hope he doesn't turn in to food, but if he does, then i guess the rbp's will have just had a $6.00 meal is all.
