First post here, loving the site, but I got a quick question regarding my rbps and the light in my tank. Everytime i turn on the light they either freeze up and stay in a tight group or throw themselves at the sides of the tank (violently). Anyone got any explaination or "cure?"

first off, welcome... piranhas are pretty skittish fish, but they will eventually become comfortable with their surroundings. if you got your fish recently, then you just need to give them a bit of time. some people may suggest dimming the lights or not having any at all, but in my experience, the best thing that you can do is to put your lights on a timer so that they go on and off at the same time everyday and let them get used to it. i have normal lighting over most of my tanks and bright lighting over my mixed shoal planted tank and i don't have any problems with my fish being scared whatsoever, they are all very active and don't run for cover when people go near their tanks. just make sure you provide a bunch of cover for them and they'll come out of their shells.

yeah man TIME is about what it adds up to

i went out and got some marine glo bulbs so they weren't as harsh but then i switched them back about a month or so later and they are doing great

welcome to the forum.. there are plenty of knowledgable people here that can answer most of all of your questions.. with that beeing said joe pretty much hit it on the head.. theyll get used to whatever lighting you put above them.. i have 326 wattts above my planted tank and my irritans is always out and about.. finger chaser and everything.. my brandtii on the other hand just sits there when his lights are on.. its just a waiting game but piranha are awesome fish and its more then worth the wait...
