Hi all, ive recently noticed my 10" female red hideing in her cave alot she has also turned a very dark color and sort of made a crater in the gravel, does this mean she is ready to breed or is having baby's?.

Thanks in advance people, if she is having babys im going to be excited:nilly:

it could do you have a male?

how do i tell male from female, i know she is a female as i saw her young and a video of her haveing her baby's. I was told the females are broader than the males, is that true?

somewhat, but p's are not very sexually dimorphic and it is very very hard to tell the difference between a male and female unless you actually see one laying eggs, or one fertilizing them.

The pair usually gets darker and moves gravel to create a nest. Then they start mating. After eggs are laid the male will continue to fertilize and aerate the eggs and protect them.

Good luck to you, Ill try to find the post that has a lot more information then I provided. Hope you will be able to post some pics of fry and eggs real soon

ok thanks m8, i do have a couple that are really n dark and she herself is really dark, i will just have to watch them closely and see what happens, i have 10 in total all very big so would the eggs and fry be ok in there with them all or would i have to move all the rest or the fry 1nce they hatched?
i hope she is as that would be great :headbang2 if so i will be posting pics asap lol

hope that helps.

If I were you I would start cycling a spare 20 or 30g tank if you got it and get it ready with a sponge filter and separate the fry once they become free swimming.

By separating them it'll be a lot easier to get the food to them and a lot easier to ensure safety from not only the other fish but, from filter, starvation, etc..

ok i think if my reds were gonna breed they would have done it by now if they have allready spawned then i cant see a thing lol so they ate their eggs or i missed the hatchlings and they ate their fry either way i dont see i think i need more plants for 1 side of the tank then we might have some progress, i have noticed a jelly like substance on 1 of my smaller reds, not really sure what that is?

Not sure what the jelly thing is, but your fish and your tank is big enough so i would just give it some time.

you also just got them back in the tank right? So they may just be settling in. maybe one was ready and couldnt find a mate. Keep us posted!!
