I found a good deal on a 28" wide and am going to put my rck in there for sure. The dimensions are 60"Lx28"Wx24" high. Do you guys think I can hold my royal in there with some tankmates for life? How many other big preds can I put in there. I was thinking of a delhezi, a jardini if it isn't too aggessive (will remove it if it is) and maybe an african pike. Is that too much for that size tank?

You are looking at a 175 gallon aquarium. Even so that will not be large enough for a RCK for life. They can attain sizes up to 40"

i know they get that big in the wild but i've never seen one close to that size in home aquaria. you're probably right though. i'll probably end up setting up a huge stock pond further down the road. i think a rck can live in a 28" wide for a long time. please correct me if i am wrong.

hell no it wont get 40in!!! that tank is fine bro go for it. your lucky if it hits 2 foot.

I've had mine for about 4.5 years and he's 19"...Currently he's in a 125 gallon...I'm looking to upgrade to a 2 foot wide tank soon...I would think you should be fine for life, they are very flexible. Mine is well feed and the water is changed 2x a week, they don't only grow longer, but they get taller as well, but that tank should be fine...
Good luck

thanks for the replies. i was pretty sure he'd be good for life in a tank that size but what about tankmates. how many other fish do you think i can put in there with him? i listed the fish im interested in on my first post.

I've tried the Jardini idea and it hasn't worked out too good...The 12" Jardini doesn't bother my big clown, if anything the clown pushes the jardini around, but the jardini is so fast he steals the food meant for my big clown knife..

My royal knife is another story, he's much smaller than my clown, and the jardini beats him up ( he's got several bite marks on him ) The Royal tends to hang by my Clown for protection cause the Jar won't mess with the big clown. Jars are a little too aggressive in my opinion, that's why I'm getting rid of mine. I've never kept bichirs, but from what I hear and read on this site they would be a better choice. I have successfully kept my clown knife with a South American red-finned pike cichlid, they actually got along great, and the pike was close to a foot and never a problem.

Hope that helps

Jude
