He looks completely fine and very active but sometimes I see him turn his body sideways and scratch himself on the bottom of the tank what could it be ?

Ive had ppl tell me its the water being too acidic im not an expert but soon as i see it i do water changes just to be safe

Have you tested the nitrates? What are they? What's your pH?

It could also be a physical irritant, like flukes.

If he looks completely fine, acts completely fine, eats completely fine, does everything completely fine, bar the once-in-a-while flashes, then it could be nothing. It's like humans. We scratch our bodies from time to time, doesn't mean that we're about to die. XD

That said, do keep an eye on him. How often are the flashes. If he doing it to the bottom of the tank, or surface he can see? Cichlids generally have certain behaviors that utilizes 'flashing'. Many communicate by seemingly spasming. I know a fish down with ich or the likes will scratch themselves on any surface possible, especially rocks and driftwood and all that.

So yeah, keep an eye on him.

Your nitrates are not high or not low! Only time I put water conditioner in is at water changes. Nothing will happen to your fish unless it gets ich if he is new give him time to
Adapt to your water chemistry, dont start messing with the water, they will adapt.

Agreed. It could be nothing more than a display of dominance, many male cichlids (and some female) cichlids will do this from time to time on substrate, rocks, etc. A fishes way of flexing their muscles.

if you get a problem with ammonia, nirite or nitrate best thing tyo do is not just dose up with prime

do a water change :D
