This is correct for this fish although adults can be sexed based on characteristics (like nuchal hump) but again, the vent is the reliable way. Other than a vent shot people are just guessing.

Good looking one and if the vent looks like a pencil point it's male, if it's more like the eraser end it's female

Try some frozen bloodworms, they usually do the trick. If not you can try mussels, they also seem to be real tasty for the fish.

Don't feed it exclusively, but untill he starts eating normally again, it's more nutrition than nothing. But you will want to get him back on a staple of pellets or similar as soon as possible as these are much higher in nutrition for your fish.

What temp is the water? Somtimes bumping the temp up a couple degrees wiil get them eating again.
